Short answer: In snow, the pram that copes best has large wheels with a grippy tread, front wheels that lock straight, suspension for frozen ruts and an insulated carrycot with a wind cover. Small swivel wheels dig in and twist. In deep or wet snow, pulling the pram behind you is often easier than pushing, and a quick rinse of salt and grit afterwards keeps the frame and bearings working.
A fresh snowfall makes the quietest walks of the year. It is also where prams show their differences: some float along, others plough, twist and stop at every kerb.
What makes a pram good in snow?
| Feature | Why it matters in snow |
|---|---|
| Large wheels | Ride on top of soft snow instead of sinking in |
| Wide tyres with tread | Grip packed snow and slush, and do not clog as quickly |
| Front wheels that lock straight | Stop small wheels from twisting sideways in ruts |
| Suspension | Absorbs the hard bumps of frozen footprints and ice ridges |
| Insulated carrycot and wind cover | Keep wind chill out while the baby lies still |
| Sturdy brake | Holds on slopes when the ground is slippery |
How to push a pram through snow
- Lock the front wheels straight before you set off on snowy paths.
- On deep or wet snow, turn round and pull the pram behind you: the large rear wheels lead and the front lifts less.
- Keep a steady pace; stopping and starting in slush is what makes wheels dig in.
- At kerbs, tilt the pram back on the rear wheels rather than pushing the front into the snow bank.
- On icy slopes, keep the wrist strap or a hand on the handle and use the brake at every stop.

Keep your baby warm — and not too warm
The baby lies still while you walk and work, so dress them in layers with a leg cover, close the wind cover and leave the ventilation slightly open. Check warmth on the chest or the back of the neck, and take a layer off when you go inside. Our guide on dressing a baby for the pram in winter has a layer-by-layer list.
After the walk: salt, grit and damp
- Rinse or wipe road salt and grit off the wheels, brake and frame with lukewarm water.
- Dry the frame and fabrics at room temperature before folding — never fold a wet pram.
- Spin the wheels: if they grind, clean the axle area and let it dry.
- Store the pram indoors rather than in a cold car boot overnight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best pram for snow?
One with large, treaded wheels, front wheels that lock straight, suspension and an insulated carrycot with a wind cover — for example Noordi Fjordi V.2.
Should I lock the front wheels in snow?
Yes. Locked front wheels stop small wheels twisting sideways in ruts and soft snow.
Is it easier to pull a pram through snow?
Often, yes. In deep or wet snow, pulling the pram behind you lets the larger rear wheels lead.
Can road salt damage a pram?
Salt and grit can wear bearings and brakes and mark the frame. Rinse and dry the pram after walks on salted paths.
How do I keep my baby warm in a pram in snow?
Layers, a leg cover, a closed wind cover and an insulated carrycot — and check warmth on the chest or back of the neck.
With the right wheels and a slower pace, snow becomes one of the best reasons to get outside together.
