Short answer: In a carrycot, the mattress should stay flat and firm, and the softness belongs everywhere else: a calm ride, gentle fabrics, fresh air and room to move. That combination supports safe sleep and still feels cosy. Never add pillows, a duvet or an extra soft layer on top of the mattress.

Soft around them. Firm beneath them.

“Is it comfortable?” is the first thing many parents ask as they lean into a carrycot and press the mattress with one hand. It is a good question with a slightly surprising answer: the most comfortable carrycot for a newborn is not the one with the softest bed.

Why the mattress stays firm

Newborns cannot yet turn their heads away from something soft against their face. A flat, firm mattress keeps the airway clear and the body in a straight, supported position. Safe sleep advice across Europe and the UK says it in different words but means the same: a firm, flat, well-fitting mattress, baby on the back, nothing loose around them.

So when a carrycot mattress feels firm under your palm, that is not a flaw. It is the one part that should not change.

How the Fjordi V.2 carrycot is put together

The THERMOCOT carrycot of Fjordi V.2 is built in layers: a soft inner fabric where your baby lies, an insulating core, and a firm outer shell for wind and drizzle. Beneath the mattress a ribbed base lets air move, so the bed stays fresher when the sun comes out.

Inside there are 81 × 37 cm of lying space, enough for a baby in a winter suit without feeling squeezed. Ventilation, a wind cover with a peek-a-boo window and an adjustable canopy let you fine-tune the climate as the weather turns. The carrycot weighs 3.2 kg, light enough to lift in and out without a fuss.

And the softness your baby feels most comes from below: independent suspension and a shock-absorbing front fork keep roots and cobbles from reaching the bed.

A five-point carrycot check

  1. Press the mattress. It should feel firm and spring back flat, without leaving a hollow.
  2. Look at the edges. The mattress should fit snugly, with no gaps between it and the carrycot walls.
  3. Check that it sits level. On the frame, the carrycot should lie flat, not tilted.
  4. Measure the inside. In autumn and winter your baby wears layers. A tight carrycot is outgrown fast; 81 cm leaves room.
  5. Find the airflow. Ask where the ventilation is and how the canopy and cover open on a warm day.

Please don’t add pillows, cushions, duvets, sheepskins or a softer topper to the carrycot. If your baby seems cold, add a layer of clothing and check the back of the neck: warm and dry is just right.

Frequently asked questions

Should a pram mattress be soft or firm?

Firm and flat. A firm mattress supports a safe sleeping position for newborns. Comfort comes from a smooth ride, soft fabrics and good airflow, not from a soft bed.

Can I put a topper or pillow in the carrycot?

No. Keep the carrycot clear: no pillows, cushions, duvets or extra soft layers. Use the mattress that came with the carrycot and dress your baby for the weather.

How big should a carrycot be inside?

Big enough for your baby to lie flat in outdoor layers. The Fjordi V.2 carrycot has 81 × 37 cm of lying space, with room for a snowsuit.

How does the Fjordi V.2 carrycot stay fresh?

A ribbed base lets air move beneath the mattress, while ventilation, a wind cover with a peek-a-boo window and an adjustable canopy help you balance warmth and airflow.

What comes after the carrycot?

Fjordi V.2 includes a reversible seat unit that lies flat to 100 cm and can be used up to 22 kg, for when your baby is ready to look around.

Made for the way you wander.
