Mother with a Noordi Fjordi V.2 pram on a quiet forest meadow

Short answer: A smooth pram turns roots, gravel and cobbles into a gentle sway instead of a string of small jolts. Large wheels, real suspension and a steady, roomy carrycot help a baby stay settled on the move, so an outdoor nap can last a little longer. The safe sleep basics stay the same: flat, on the back, never covered.

Rough path. Calm ride.

Many parents notice it on the first long walk: the baby drifts off on smooth pavement and wakes at the first stretch of gravel. Sleeping outside is one of the small joys of a Nordic-style day, and the way a pram rides has a lot to do with how long that sleep lasts.

What a bumpy path feels like from the carrycot

Every root, cobble and kerb sends a short jolt up through the wheels and the frame. On a stiff pram those jolts reach the carrycot almost unchanged, and a sleeping baby feels them as a steady rattle. Speed makes it worse: the faster you walk over rough ground, the sharper each bump.

Softness in a pram is about filtering those jolts before they arrive. Not by making the bed softer (a carrycot mattress should stay flat and firm), but by making the whole pram ride more calmly.

Fjordi V.2 and Sia: two ways to a calmer walk

Fjordi V.2 was designed for the long way round. Independent suspension and a shock-absorbing front fork take the edge off kerbs and roots, large All-Road™ wheels roll over gravel, and the insulated THERMOCOT carrycot gives 81 × 37 cm of lying space, enough for a baby in a snowsuit. On a forest path the wheels roll, the suspension smooths the rest, and the carrycot stays calm.

Sia is the light one. It weighs 5.9 kg, has front and rear suspension and puncture-free wheels, and with a near-flat recline and an 80 cm bed it can be used from birth. An easy companion for city naps between the tram and the café.

A calm outdoor nap, step by step

  1. Flat and on the back. In the newborn months your baby sleeps lying flat in the carrycot, face up, with nothing loose around them.
  2. Dress for the weather. Use layers you can add or remove. Feel the back of the neck: warm and dry is right, damp means too warm. How to dress a baby for a winter pram walk.
  3. Never drape a blanket over the hood. Use the canopy and wind cover instead, so fresh air keeps moving.
  4. Pick the smoother line. Packed gravel and forest tracks often ride better than broken pavement. Slow down over roots and kerbs.
  5. Stay close. Keep your baby in sight and check on them often, wherever the nap happens.

Follow the safe sleep guidance in your own country, and ask your health visitor or paediatrician if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Does a smooth pram really help a baby sleep?

A smoother ride means fewer sharp jolts reach the carrycot, so a sleeping baby is disturbed less often on uneven paths. It does not replace a calm routine and the right layers, but it helps a walk-time nap last longer.

Which parts of a pram make the ride smoother?

Large wheels, suspension between the wheels and the frame, a shock-absorbing front fork and a carrycot that sits firmly without rattling. Together they filter bumps before they reach your baby.

Is it safe for a baby to nap outside in a pram?

Many families do it. Keep your baby flat on the back in the carrycot, dress for the weather, never cover the hood with a blanket, stay close and follow the safe sleep guidance in your country.

Which Noordi pram rides most smoothly on forest paths?

Fjordi V.2. It has independent suspension, a shock-absorbing front fork, large All-Road wheels and the insulated THERMOCOT carrycot.

Can Sia be used for naps from birth?

Yes. Sia can be used from birth up to 4 years (22 kg). It has a near-flat recline, an 80 cm bed and front and rear suspension.
